Ford 4X4 Explorer has a scary shake when you hit bumps when driving
over 30mph.

Car Owner Problem:
My steering wheel shakes really bad if I hit a
bump especially while driving over 30mph. It is so scary I have to stop
the truck to make the shaking stop. This happened after we did a brake
job. So far, I have rotated the tires but did not change anything. I
also had the front end aligned and made sure everything is tight.
However, there was no improvement in the condition. My son was advised
to change the rack and pinion assembly but this is very expensive and I
want to be sure before we do it.
Tire Advisor:
This
must be your lucky day because the fix for this is simple. All you do
is check the power steering reservoir for air and remove it. This
problem is common for this model and often happens to this vehicle when
the steering wheel is turned while the front tires are up in the air.
This is will introduce air to your ps system and will result in
shaking. You can try bleeding the ps reservoir housing with engine
running.
Note:
When
you see bubbles in the ps pump reservoir, that is a sure sign of air in
the system. To bleed manually, start your engine and turn the steering
wheel from end to end.
This fix assumes that your set of tires is new and properly balanced.
