Michelin Tires as we know today began in Auvergne region. This is located in Clermont-Ferrand, FRANCE. Having started in the early 1830s as a tire manufacturer; Michelin Tires manufactured solid tires used on bicycles and mobile units at that time. During those days, there was no “inflated air tire” as we now know them today. All tires were of solid type that has to be glued or fastened to the tire rim or tire wheel. It posed a problem to the tire owners that when the tire breaks, it has to be rebuilt and glued again to the tire rim. The process also involved a lot of tools and took about 15 hours for rebuilding which was too expensive in those days.
In 1886, the ownership of this tire manufacturer was handed over to Andre and Edouard Michelin brothers. They implemented aggressive designs to change the tire making process by experimenting on revolutionary “removable” tires to enable the owner to fix the tires by themselves. This lead to the creation of Michelin tires that were inflated by air which can be removed and repaired ONSITE if there is a breakdown.
The inflatable Michelin tires were first introduced in an automobile racing in Paris-Bordeaux Race of 1895. Although the Michelin brother's car finished last, their new designed has caught the eye of the tire industry that everybody started to use their new “invention”. Even at the end of that race, André Michelin predicted that within 10 years, ALL tires will be fitted with removable air tires. And he was dead wrong… because it only took 5 short years and the rest is history as we now know it today.
With Michelin’s innovation, the world has benefited from Michelin tires that greatly saved a lot of tire users on both time and money to have a tire that is comfortable and cheap to operate.
