Discover Michelin Tires great innovations…Find out their 3 breakthrough tire discoveries that would catapult Michelin tires to the forefront of the tire industry!
Michelin Tires is the leading tire manufacturer today because of the innovations they have introduced in the past. With their constant focus on research and development, they have consistently introduced tires products that are in great demand the world over.
Here is a list of their 3 greatest discoveries:
1895
Michelin invented and introduced the first detachable and pneumatic tires. It was a departure from the common method where a tire was made of solid rubber that glued to the tire rim. The old method required lots of setting up and drying which took 15 hours to do. The new process consisted of an “air” inflated rubber that can be bolted to the rim which can be repaired in minutes by the owner.
1946
Michelin introduced the FIRST radial tire which greatly surpassed the bias tires because it utilized a separate ply for the tread and sidewall adding flexibility to the tire. It also allowed a light constructed tire that supports more contact pressure to the ground. This leads to longer lasting tire that contributes to the vehicle’s fuel economy.
1965
Michelin invented asymmetric tires which refer to using special chemicals at varying degrees to its tread (usually silica). This design leads to a durable tire that could resist heat which has more grips for the treads.
Up to the present, Michelin tires continually research and test its products in the racing circuit which lead in their popularity in Formula One and Grand Prix Rallies. The results of these tests in the racing circuit are then passed to the street tires that we now enjoy at present.
