Tire problem on 2000 Ford Windstar is shimmy at 60 mph
Symptoms:
Last week, after hitting a bump, my 2000 Ford Windstar started shaking
vigorously at the front when driving at 60 mph. I took it to an alignment
shop where they tried rotating the tires and putting new set of tires at
the front and it did not fix the problem. All the readings for the
alignment were checked and nothing were found defective. Brake rotors were
checked for wobbling and they were fine too. I am now afraid to take this
van to the highway and I need your help!
Tire Problem Advisor:
When you are driving and suddenly hit a bump that causes your van to shake,
it usually indicates a component failure. I would look closely at your front
shocks, which uses a strut. This can fail and cause the symptoms you are
having now. Have a look at that and see if the strut cylinder is leaking.
If possible, I would consider putting a new set of struts on this van.
Notes:
Ford has a service bulletin (# 00-21-10) on 2000 Windstar for vibration at
45 mph, which calls for replacing of some front-end components. However,
since your vibration occurs after hitting the bumps at 60 mph, you should
tell them the difference.
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Ford dealer shop for a
second opinion.
Above repair is only a recommendation and you do this at your own risk. Always
have your vehicle align after replacing the tires to prevent repetition of
the tire problem.
