Tire problem on 98 Chevy Suburban K1500 that cause it to wander intermittently
Symptoms:
I bought this truck six months ago and the last couple of weeks, I
noticed something is not right with my steering. What is happening
is while you are driving on any speed, the steering wheel will suddenly
over steer as if my gearbox is loose. This would cause the truck to
wander all around and when that happens, it is very scary. One garage
looked at my steering gearbox and the front alignment but they could
not find anything. The tires are new and rotated twice already since
I owned it. I am afraid this truck is unsafe and I need your help
right away!
Tire Problem Advisor:
Beginning 1998 upwards, Chevy Suburban trucks are equipped with Electronic
Variable Orifice (EVO) power steering system which controls oil pressures
in your power steering pump for better road handling and stability. This
is done using 2 control modules fed by 2 sensors mounted in your power
steering pump and steering column. Most problems relating to this system
usually originates on the sensor located at the steering column.
To verify if this is the cause of the problem, try unplugging the 3 wire
terminals of that sensor. If I remember it right, the colors are light blue,
grey and orange black (or ask your Chevy dealer for the right colors).
If the symptom stops, replace that sensor under the steering column.
Notes:
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Chevy dealer shop for a
second opinion.
Above repair is only a recommendation and you do this at your own risk. Always
have your vehicle align after replacing the tires to prevent repetition of
the tire problem.
