Premature tire wear on 2003 Toyota Prius tires
Symptoms:
I owned a 2003 Toyota Prius and this car eats tires! The size of my tires are Bridgestone tire BT70s with sizes 175/65SR14. Although I have it rotated every 7000 mile oil change, the tires still wears prematurely. I am now on my third set of tires which the dealer was kind enough to replace under warranty but I am afraid that when the warranty is over, it will be my huge problem. I use 36 lbs tire pressure in front and 32 at the back. Can you suggest anything?
Tire Problem Advisor:
This car has a common problem of premature tear wear unless you do the following:
Increase your tire pressures to 45 at front and 40 at the back.
Try getting an extra tire load capacity tire like Bridgestone Potenza RE92
Make frequent tire rotation every 3000 miles.
Reports from other garages show that if you do the above practice, you can save yourself a lot of rubber and worries. This is especially true if the road you are using is not paved that will cause an extra load on your tires.
Notes:
To get a better results, monitor your tire pressures after first month of installation and watch for any uneven pattern of wear.
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Toyota dealer shop to make sure your tire problem is fixed.
