Tire Problems Vibration for 1997 Acura 3.5RL
Symptoms:
My 1997 Acura 3.5RL runs fine when started from cold but would start
vibrating after driving it for 10 miles. The vibration occurs at speed
between 60 to 70 mph. If you stop and rested the car for 5 minutes, the
shaking will stop until you reached 10 miles again. Note also that this
vibration goes away when accelerating the car. I brought it for a front-end
alignment and the following front-end parts were inspected:
Transmission mounts were checked and replaced.
Both front drive axles were found OK except some looseness on the inner
CV joints.
Thanks for your advice!
Tire Problem Advisor:
The first and foremost way to check this is to substitute a good known tires
from another car not showing this symptoms. After replacing them, go for a
road test and observe if the problem comes back. If this fails to fix the
problem, rechecked the front CV joints, which you indicated to be loose. If
possible take apart the CV joint bearings and check for wear. Repack it with
grease, assemble and go again for road test to confirm if problem is still
there. Even if the problem if the vibration has improved only a little, you
might consider replacing the CV joints assembly altogether.
Notes:
Worn CV joints can fail in 3 ways:
Clicking noise when cornering is an indication of outer CV joint failure.
Clunking noise during acceleration is an inner CV joint failure
Vibration or shaking during acceleration is an indication of worn and
misaligned CV joint.
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Land Rover dealer shop to make sure your tire problem is fixed.
