Tire Problem Vibration for 97 Jeep Cherokee when hitting bumps
Symptoms:
I have a big time vibration after hitting bumps on my 97 Jeep Cherokee.
This vibration gets worse in highway speeds and can be felt in the steering
wheel. I took it for an alignment job and both jeep steering stabilizer and
tracking bar were replaced including the front shocks. Ball joints, tie
rods were all found to be OK and tight including making adjustment to
the steering gearbox. Unfortunately, all of these did not help the situation.
Some adjustments were also done on the caster together with the inspection
of lower suspension arm bushings and the U joints. I am running out of
options, can you help?
Tire Problem Advisor:
This is a tough call you have replaced almost everything on the front-end.
However, one thing you did not say on your fixes is did you use an ordinary
steering stabilizer? It’s because the only stabilizer that will work here
is a “super heavy duty steering stabilizer” made by an aftermarket dealer.
For some reason, the ones available from the dealer (OEM stabilizer) do not
seem to stand up to the loads. This is based on the reports of most garages
in US and Canada. Here are other remedies for this problem:
Unbalanced tires
Mismatched tires
Make sure the above tires are checked for these defects.
Notes:
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to an authorized Toyota dealer shop.
Above repair is only a recommendation and you do this at your own risk.
Always have your vehicle align after replacing the tires to prevent
repetition of the tire problem.
