Tire problem on 95 Mercedes Benz that wear tires quickly
Symptoms:
I have this 95 Mercedes Benz S320 that has tires wearing quickly on both
edges of the right tires after it gets about 5000-10,000 miles. A recent
front-end alignment was performed and both the alignments at the front and
rear were found OK. All front end components including the link bushings
were within tolerable limits, shocks were responding properly and no visible
indications that any parts are worn. Thanks in advance for your help.
Tire Problem Advisor:
Since this car suspension has no car levelling system, this problem will be a
little bit harder to diagnose. For this type of tire wear, checking the rear
lower control arm bushing is the best option. Check for looseness by prying
it and verify for any movements. If found defective, take this car to an
authorized MB shop to replace the bushings for you.
However, most of this problem can be attributed to poor monitoring of tire
pressure, which must be kept at the recommended rates (see your car manual
for proper setting). Finally, you should try using Michelin MXV4 tires for
this type of car. Findings show that this type of tires gives at least
30,000 miles life on the treads of course depending how you drive the car
and maintain the tires.
Notes:
When servicing the front-end of this car, take note that the ball joints
are maintenance free and require no greasing. If there is any visible
looseness, replace the ball joints.
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Mercedes Benz dealer shop for a
second opinion to avoid repetition of the tire problem.
