Tire problem on 97 Volkswagen Jetta that wears the rear tires prematurely
Symptoms:
I just bought this 97 Volkswagen Jetta and installed 4 tires. However, during
the course of driving in the last few months, it seems like the left rear tires
are wearing prematurely. I would like to know what is causing? I have sent this
ut for a front-end alignment but the garage could not find anything wrong with it,
any suggestions on your part will be highly appreciated.
Tire Problem Advisor:
Unlike most cars, this vehicle has a different rear axle system, which is made of
a solid axle beam. Unless this beam is bent, that would cause the rear tire
misalignment, which could result in premature tire wear. The only possible other
components that could possibly go defective are the rear shocks and the coil springs.
Heavy driver can cause unbalance distribution of the carload, which can result in this
symptom. Double check the tire wheel of this rear tire before mounting a new one
to make sure it is properly balance. Finally, don’t forget to do a tire alignment
job after the new sets of tires are mounted.
Notes:
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized Volkswagen dealer shop.
Above repair is only a recommendation and you do this at your own risk. Always have
your vehicle align after replacing the tires to prevent repetition of the problem.
