Tire questions on 1996 GM Astro minivan when selecting a new set of tires
Symptoms:
The front tires of my 1996 GM Astro minivan wear faster especially
on the right side of the tire. Both inner and outer edges of the
tires are affected. This problem was happening even though I brought
it regularly for a front-end alignment. I am now planning to buy a
new set of tires and I wonder what type of tires should I use? Somebody
told me that a wider tire might help or a light truck tire with stronger
sidewall can solve this problem.
Is there any thing I can check or
do before buying a new set of tires? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Tire Problem Advisor:
Resolve first the issue of premature wear of your tires before attempting
to replace your tires. You need to try a second garage to check your
alignment to double check if any of your suspension or steering parts is
really defective or loose. A worn idler arm could do this and you can
tell your garage to check that.
Here is a guideline you can use when selecting a new set of tires:
Use only replacement tires that matches or exceeds the original tire
speed rating designation. This should be available in the vehicle’s
owner’s manual or sticker found in the glove box or driver’s door.
Notes:
When in doubt, bring your vehicle to authorized GM dealer shop.
Above repair is only a recommendation and you do this at your own risk. Always
have your vehicle align after replacing the tires to prevent repetition
of the tire problem.
