Irregular tire wear can cause havocs to your tires that must be corrected immediately. However you have to know the pattern of tire wear on your tire treads to implement the corrective solutions.
The most common causes of tire wear are:
Out of balance tire and wheel
Vehicle misalignment
Out of balance tire happens when the weight of the tire and wheel are not distributed evenly on the wheel circumference resulting in “heavy spots” formation in the tire. This results in cupping excessively on the heavy spots leading to uneven tire wear. To correct this, a counter balance weight is installed opposite the heavy spot to prevent this tire wear. Most modern garages use computer controlled balance machines that can detect heavy spots and balance them.
Balancing tires are needed on the following conditions:
When mounting new tires
When repairing flats requiring dismounting of the tires
When moving tires to another position
When using used tires
Proper vehicle alignment is important to allow tires to move freely, run straight which results in even wear. Failure to align your tires regularly can result in the following tire wear patterns:
Excessive toe in or positive toe will results in outside edge wear
Excessive toe out or negative toe will result in inside edge wear
Excessive positive camber can result in wear in outer half of tire treads
Excessive negative camber can result in wear in inner half of tire treads
Excessive scrubs can result in inside/outside steer axle tire wear patterns
Always check your vehicle alignment at least once a year or if uneven tire wear pattern shows up in your tires. Doing this will give you the best economical use of your tires that prevents uneven tire wear. .
