Buying used tires might be your good option if you want to save money. However, there are some important things to consider before doing this especially if you buy it from Ebay Motors.
First of all, contact the seller so you can ask questions about the used tire you are buying like the following:
How long ago did you buy the used tires? As a good precaution, tires more than 3 months old are risky to buy. Although the seller can send you a detailed picture of the used tires, if it is more than 3 months old, it might have tire defects not visible in the picture like hidden cracks, small bulge in the tire sidewall which indicates tire separation which are unsafe to use.
Only buy used tires that are NOT installed with the wheels. Why? So you can see the mounting beads. Some tires have manufacturing defects that are usually associated with poor bead construction, which results in tire explosion. If the tire and wheel are together, this will be hard for you to verify. Plus, if the wheel itself has a crack, that is another problem for you.
A good precaution to ask to resolve the age of the tire is to show you the receipt of the used tire if it is available. This one might be seen as extreme but if you consider the risk to your pocket and especially to your own safety, this step is crucial.
Finally, ask him a detailed picture of the used tires in the following location:
A close up picture of the sidewall of the tire is needed. This way you can see if there’s any cracks or small bulge.
A close up picture of the mounting bead where the wheel sits is also needed. This way you can see if the bead diameter looks uniform, is not torn or have the signs of cracks.
Finally, a good used tire has good tread depth. This can be easily seen on the picture if you ask for it. This is also the best indicator of tire life. Slightly used tires must have at least ¼ inch thickness of threads. Maximum wear should not exceed 1/8 inch of an inch.
Remember, although buying used tire might be cheap, you stand to loose money if you cannot use it after it is shipped to you with tire defects.
